Bright Futures Peru Helps Kids Succeed in School

Elementary school children at the Niños Del Oro community center.

The primary goal of Bright Futures Peru is to help children from marginalized and impoverished communities obtain a good education.

A secondary goal is to give the people who volunteer with Bright Futures Peru the opportunity to improve their Spanish speaking skills and develop a better understanding of the world while doing important work helping at-risk children.

The volunteers and teachers that work with Bright Futures Peru contribute to the first goal by giving academic help to children who are at risk of falling behind their classmates or have already fallen behind and are at risk of dropping out of school.

Volunteers and teachers also do fun activities with the kids like art projects with themes about other countries of the world, teaching the kids how to swim, taking them to the beach, playing fun games, and doing group sports activities. These extra activities bring joy to the kids, boost their self-esteem, and show them that there is a bigger world outside of the limited world they are able to see in their neighborhoods.

Many of the children Bright Futures Peru helps face very challenging situations which oftentimes include chronic poverty, bullying, food insecurity, community violence, verbal and physical abuse, sexual abuse, and learning disabilities. Some of the children do not have a mother or father in the home due to death or child abandonment.

Bright Futures Peru volunteers and teachers help give these children positive role models and the emotional and academic support they need to overcome the negative aspects of society and help keep the child on a positive path that leads to educational achievement, healthy relationships, self-improvement, and achieving their goals.

There are thousands of beautiful, intelligent, hard-working children living in very difficult conditions in the La Esperanza district of Trujillo. These children want to do so much with their lives and become respected members of their community and help others.  Like so many young people, they want to become educators, police officers, engineers, business people, computer programmers, nurses, and doctors.

Think about the feeling in the heart of a child when a respected adult says, “I am your friend, I believe in you, and I am going to help you succeed.”  That adult becomes a guide and role model for the child and gives the child the motivation to stay on the right path.  Hopefully, every child has someone in their life who supports them.  This is the reason for Bright Futures Peru, to help these children so they can be supported, get their education, and achieve their potential.
